It’s Saturday, the day before Easter and I want to deposit some of the checks that have come in during the week from all of our affiliate programs, ad sales and such.
I go to my local branch and go inside and am at least the 6th person back.
Two tellers, which is normal and one at the drive-up window, which is normal.
The teller on the left is dealing with a young lady with a check written on an account from this bank, but she doesn’t have an account.
It’s not too painful, but it does cause some consternation, as the teller acts as if the young lady is some kind of criminal because she doesn’t have an actual bank account of her own.
I can’t say as I blame her, as most transactions performed in person are painful, which is why I have direct deposit, bank and pay bills online and use PayPal when I can.
The really painful part though, is when the teller completes her transaction and then tries to sell the young lady a “no minimum balance checking account “, while 6 of us, who have accounts stand and listen to the young lady and the teller go thru all the features.
OMG ! This ain’t the time for this. Like Kenny Rogers said, ” … you gotta know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em. “
Have her come back when the lines aren’t this long or refer her to a customer service rep who doesn’t have card carrying customers waiting 6 deep and getting more fed up all the time.
There’s a time for sales and there’s a time for customer service.

Mike I agree 100%. I hate dealing with banks. Last year I closed on a house for some friends who were on vacation. It was a foreclosure so they had to close before the bank took the house back and they had previously planned a vacation in Hawaii so they gave me a Power of Attorney to close for them. I had to go to their bank and get two cashiers checks to take to the closing. Despite my friends calling the bank to inform them I would be coming and my possession of all the legal documents, they treated me like I was trying to rob the bank…ludicrous! It took over an hour for them to write 2 stinking checks!
Hey Robert,
Only an hour ? You got off easy for something as complicated as two whole checks.
I checked out your blog and liked what I saw … even the link to my blog !
I’ll be watching and reading, so I can speak well of you when I make a formal post introducing you to my readers.
Iliked the part about hitting golf balls. You should check out one of my other blogs at http://www.travellinggolfer.com.
Also, I’d like to see an About page … to make sure you’re not a Hoosier or something bad like that.
Shoot me an email to mike ( nospam ) @ (nospam ) simplenomics.com
How much you wanna bet the teller would receive a bonus for each account she opened.
Fess up, Mike. You a Cardinal or a Wildcat?
Hey Glenn,
I’d bet with you that she gets a bonus for every new account she “sells”.
I actually went to Western Kentucky University, so I’m a Hilltopper ! Our corporate office is in Bowling Green, so I stay close to the ‘Toppers.
I lived in and still work in Louisville, so I love the Cards too. Denny Crum was a hero to us high schoolers in the late 70′s and early 80′s.
BUT, I love the “cats and the way the basketball team polarizes the whole state !
I am a teller and i would like to add to your comments that always the customers come first. The banks exist because of their customers. What i would like to mention though is that some of you are not very right to judge most of the tellers this way. It is understandable that it’s not pleasant to wait in line to get your turn in front of the teller window. As tellers, we are required to offer accounts to every single non-customer. We do not get bonuses on this, we get points. The pay we usually get for performing our duties is lower that the average standard. Moreover we do not open accounts, we just mention the products, which shouldn’t take more than 30sec to a minute.
As important to understand the needs of our customers, it is important as well for the customers to put themselves into the tellers shoes and be more cooperative.

Hey Kane – Every point you mention is about you and against the customer. That’s why we don’t like the way you guys treat us … banks think it’s all about them.
We don’t care if you make minimum wage. You took the job, didn’t you ? You knew what the pay was before you started.
We don’t care about the services you want to “sell”, we want to conduct a transaction and leave, that’s why we use online banking so much, because you can’t offer us anything, except by a popup ad that we can click away from.
When banks remember it’s customers that matter, not the reports run for stockholders, they’ll be what they’re supposed to be, Until then, they suck.
