I couldn&#039;t agree with you more. From my experiences, take the budget that you have for &quot;motivation techniques&quot; and spend them on screening techniques in the hiring process. I send potential hires for profile tests to get a handle on their characters, strengths and weaknesses. We&#039;d rather have someone with little or no sales experience who profiles as a go-getter and self-motivated, than someone with experience working for 4 of our competitors. 
A man I consider much wiser than myself once said something that always stuck in my mind.
His 2 cents was that once a salesmans earnings allow him to reach a lifestyle that he is happy with, it is almost impossible to motivate him/her to work harder. This is virtually the same thing that you have expressed above. Motivation has to come from within. The boss&#039; job is to find motivated individuals and then to ensure that they have the tools to do the best job that they possibly could.Period. Give them the tools and get out of their way. Simple. (not really)</description>
